As stated by a high-ranking military official, the American armed forces executed a lethal kinetic engagement on a boat in the eastern Pacific, killing four people.

“A US joint task force carried out a deadly attack on a vessel linked to a Designated Terrorist Organization in open sea. Surveillance confirmed the vessel was transiting along a known drug smuggling route and was involved in illicit drug transport. All four male narco-terrorists were killed, and no American forces were harmed.”

Context and Prior Strikes

This announcement follows a day after a declaration regarding a naval blockade of all targeted oil tankers entering and leaving Venezuela. In that announcement on online platforms, the US president alleged Venezuela of using oil revenues to fund narcotics smuggling and other crimes, vowing to increase the military buildup.

Just on Tuesday, US defense officials said it had carried out strikes on three boats it accused of trafficking drugs in the Pacific, leading to the deaths of eight people. Beginning on 2 September, more than 20 strikes have resulted in the deaths of at least 99 individuals, the majority off the coast of Venezuela.

Government Defends Tactics Amidst Pressure

The administration has faced increasing pressure to make public video of a 2 September vessel attack. However, officials have declined to do so. The administration has defended its efforts as a success, arguing it has prevented drugs from entering US shores and has pushed back on concerns that it is exceeding the limits of legal military action.

While the administration has stated the operation is about halting drugs destined for the US, remarks from a top official appeared to suggest a broader political objective. In a recently published interview, the senior advisor said the president “wants to keep on blowing boats up until the Venezuelan president surrenders or concedes.”

This indicates the series of strikes may be part of a strategy to remove Venezuela's sitting leadership.
